I am looking into buying a Dadchund ( wich will be my first dog)What advice can you give me about Daschunds?
Dachshund's are usually great little dogs, but they do have some behavioral and medical issues you should take into consideration before deciding if its right for you.
This site has lots of info on many breeds:

They are the cutest! My sister and I adopted a little baby girl about a year and six months ago. Now she's a feisty, protective, beautiful adult. Although she's half Chihuahua she's very much Daschund. If you do get one, watch out for when they're preparing for bed, they literally fold and arrange the covers for their comfort. It's an amazing sight! Also, full blooded Daschunds tend to have back problems so keep your new pup active and avoid over feeding. They bring much joy. Good luck and think about adopting!!
they are very stubborn, hard to potty train, likes to chew, good companions.
read a book
I've never had a Daschdund myself, but I know this much about them: Daschdunds are moderate yo-yoers as far as weight, so you should keep its diet consistant.
you can look on petfinder.com, and i really hope you look into rescues or animals shelters, you find your best friends from there : )
Remember not to be too gentle or harsh on a puppy/dog, and just be assertive, which will be kind of strange as a first time dog owner. you are probably going to want to shower it with affection but if you give affection without dicipline the dog will become unstable.
You might want to look into books focusing on general breed specs.
=]
please search animal shelters first, as those given a second chance will most likely prove to be the best companion you could have. :)
good luck and hope you enjoy your companion!
Please adopt one from the pound. Save a life, for the ones in the stores will ALL find homes.
Don't let size confuse you, these little guys are bred for BADGERS. Badgers are mean, formidable foes and the dachshunds were bred to combat them.
Take it to the vet to be checked out first. They have a high rate of back problems.
They are very cute dogs. If I got a dog that's the one I would get.
You have to watch their weight - they can easily get heavy which can contribute to hip and back leg problems, which they're prone to.
I have had a couple...they have been good dogs..but watch their weight if they get to heavy it puts alot of stress on their backs
All the advice given above is good advice, but I thought I should mention that Dachshunds can have violent allergic reactions to their yearly vaccines, especially the Leptospirosis portion. I have 4 dachshunds right now and had their yearly vaccines done 2 days ago. Two of my four dogs are still in the hospital under constant observation because they nearly went into anaphylactic shock shortly after getting their shots. They broke out in hives, started vomiting, their hearts were racing, and they were hyperventilating.
This isn't something that happens to all dachshunds, just something you need to be aware of in case you get one.
They are great dogs as far as I am concerned! I had two, and they got along well with the whole family. I must warn you, as they get older, they are known to have back issues since they have the long bodies. I just put up ramps and discouraged jumping up on thing. Also, try not to pick them up by just grabbing them around the waist and lifting them up. You will need to give their whole body support. I would get another Dachshund any day. They were affectionate and loving to both my husband and I. Best of luck in your search for a new dog.
My cousin had one as a child. As puppies they are very tiny and cute! They have LOTS of energy! As adults you have to be careful of there portion intake. They are longer than they are wide with short legs. Too much weight gives them serious back problems.
like any dog they can have problems but they are great little dogs but can be prone to hip dysplasia... so you need to watch their weight and exercise while their young. talk to a breeder and they'll happily tell you all about them. The best place to find lots of responsible breeders (NOT puppy farmers) are at dog shows, many breeders have dogs being shown as well.
I have 6, I am with dachshund rescue and often have foster dachsies too.
Get a book - the library has it, or you can order it online - ';Dachshund for Dummies';, stupid name but wonderful book, funny, informative, great to read.
You will find all the pecularlities and pros and cons of dachshund - they are ';a breed apart';, very comical, brave, loyal, intelligent - but can be very stubborn and think of themselves as giants.
I obviously love the breed, they are wonderful companions - loyal and loving.
Please consider rescue for your dachshund. There are all sorts, smooths, long hairs, wire hairs, standards, minis, looking for good forever homes. They are homeless through no fault of their own usually and a rescue will test their personalities, neuter/spay them, take care of their health and vaccination needs. In short, you know what you are getting, rather than buying a puppy from a breeder and having it be nothing like you expected. Also, breeders are in it for money, not for the love of the breed.
Hope you get the dachshund you want - and that you consider rescue, or your local shelters first.
Good luck!!! You are in for a treat if you get a good dachshund.
make sure you go to a very good breeder. and never let your pup up on the couch unattended. back problems is the worst thing about this breed. i have a 14 year old. he runs the house like a pup but we are all very allert to his actions. you always have to watch allergies too. keep up with a good vet. and keep in mind i said good not the most expencive.
Do as much research as possible before you buy your dog, you need to be able to understand you dog %26amp; its breed
dont take them out in the snow
I recently got a new dog! they're great! The day you get ur pup take it to the vet !
You will need: A cosy bed
a warm blanket
some toys (even rolled up socks)
a clock to simulate the mums heartbeat
a crate to bring ur perfect pet home in
Food (the best is Royal Canin)
a bowl
the pups own part of the houuse
a play with routine
an training mats ( VERY helpful!)
As a 1st time owner perhaps a rescue dog could be a good choice but it's up to you!
And of course love and attention (sounds soppy but anyhoo!)
