I am getting a Shih tzu maltese but i have a cat. does anyone have advice about how to introduce them?

i have a loving cat. but she can be VERY protective.

my old dog was attacked by her!

i really want this dog, and shes the only thing in my way!

but i love her!!!I am getting a Shih tzu maltese but i have a cat. does anyone have advice about how to introduce them?
try putting the dog in a carrier or small cage %26amp; set her in the middle of a room that the cat is in...let the cat come to her %26amp; decide wat she thinks of her...then once the cat is used to the dog take the dog out but hang on to her and let the cat come over %26amp; see what she thinks...then once shes used to the dog this way let the dog loose but if the dog chases the cat then get her back or the cat might scratch her

good luck! =]]I am getting a Shih tzu maltese but i have a cat. does anyone have advice about how to introduce them?
So you really want to complicate your life? WHY do you want the dog? If you can avoid interfering in the process, just throw them together and see what happens. The dog will learn to fend for herself, and the cat will get used to the intruder. The cat sounds like she's established herself as the grand dame and no-one is going to get any of you, so be ready for an interesting time of it..
I have a cat that adopted me in 2003 (The cat owns me I don't own her). I have 2 Maltese shih tzu. One is the mum that I got in 2005 as a 8 week pup, the other is her baby who was born on July 12 this year.

The cat sleeps on my bed but the dogs are Never allowed on my bed. Let the cat have some dog free zones. If the dog is very young the cat probably wont worry too much.

The cat is the princess of the house, the dogs chase her from a respectable distance.
try taking them both outside your home to introduce the dog.

Since the cat has been there longer, she probably feels as if the house is hers and anything coming into it is trespassing into her territory so she will attack because she is scared they will try to take over.

outside the home, the cat will feel less intimidated because that doesn't belong to her so anything she meets out there can't possibly attack her position or take her things.

Good Luck!
Don't be such a sook animals will alway fight for dominance. throw the dog in and let them sort it out a few scratches from the cat and most dogs will get the message.. As to a shitzu(sic), intelligence is not a strong point for these dogs it may take some time !!
Sweet! You'll wanna make sure that your cat has seniority. Feed her first like by a couple minutes, keep the dog away from any special spots your cat has so she doesn't feel the need to be protective. If you want to play with your dog make sure that you don't ignore your cat. At first you'll wanna be very cautious and make it known to your new dog that he/she is the ';new dog on the block'; as it were and that your cat is in charge. Gradually you can feed them closer and closer together, let them sleep near each other and soon they will like each other or at least learn to tolerate them! Have fun!
